According to the British Financial Times, informed sources revealed that the Amazon was considering additional investments of billions of dollars to the artificial intelligence company Anthropic to deepen the strategic partnership. If this investment is successfully completed, it will further expand the scale of Amazon investment in the company at the end of last year.

According to the report, the electrician giant was considering additional investment over the $8 billion pledged last November. By the end of last year, the Amazon invested $4 billion in anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, to bet on the generation of artificial intelligence, which doubled its total investment in Anthropic.
According to the Financial Times, the proposed investment will enable the Amazon to consolidate its position as one of the largest shareholders in Anthropic beyond Google, which has invested over $3 billion.

Dan Grossman, Vice President of the Amazon Global Enterprise Development, said to the newspaper: “We are soon aware that there are many fundamental and key common goals on both sides. The scale of existing investments is a reflection of our cooperation ambitions.”
The Amazon had previously invested approximately $1.38 billion in Anthropic to support the development of its AI model (such as the Claude series) mainly in the form of convertible bonds. Cooperation between the two parties included the provision of AI technical support by Anthropic for Amazon cloud services and participation in the construction of data centres (e.g. the 2.2 Giwa project in Indiana) to meet AI computing needs.
Anthropic is an American artificial intelligence start-up company founded in 2021 and dedicated to the development of a secure, interpretable and controlled AI system. Founded by a group of former OpenAI employees, including brothers and sisters Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, the core objective is to ensure that the development of AI technology is compatible with long-term human well-being. Anthropic is known for its flagship product, Claude Series Large Language Model (LLM), and is located as a competitor for OpenAI ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Following the predominance of rivals such as OpenAI and Google, especially in the area of consumer-grade AI products, the Amazon is working to improve its competitiveness in the area of artificial intelligence. At present, the technology giants are competing to increase AI’s input and to adopt innovative strategies to reach out to top AI talent.
